We are proud to share what is likely the largest photo-identification dataset of the Indian Grey Wolf (Canis lupus pallipes) assembled from Maharashtra. Every pack and individual profile in this collection has been developed through years of observations, combining the knowledge of our field team and local Wildlife Watchers. This is a commitment to understanding one of India’s most understudied and rapidly declining large carnivores. Our dataset contains thousands of photographs and videos of individually identifiable wolves, but our special focus for this series is on breeding pairs monitored across six districts of Maharashtra. These breeding adults form the foundation of wolf society, and the stability of wolf populations is often closely linked to their survival. Scars from territorial conflicts, unique coat patterns, ear notches, and behavioural traits have helped us recognize wolves as individuals. Today, AI-assisted image analysis is further enhancing our ability to identify and monitor them with greater accuracy.
