Since 2010, The Grasslands Trust (TGT) and Spanish researchers have collaborated to monitor the Indian wolf in Pune’s human-dominated landscapes. While these wolves demonstrate "extreme coexistence" with people, they now face critical threats from rapid habitat loss due to urban sprawl and mining. A major rising concern for the team is the surge in free-ranging dogs, which compete for food and spread deadly diseases like Canine Distemper Virus (CDV), resulting in high pup mortality. TGT continues to combine field research with community engagement to ensure the survival of this ancient lineage.
